I painted these women in 2021, 2022, and 2023 with the hopes of capturing anger as an emotion under a gendered context. In order, the paintings go, "The Madonna Whore," "Through the Root/Hasta La Raiz," and "La Malinche." The Madonna Whore complex conceptualizes the lack of intersectionality between women's sexuality and their respectability. The second piece I made after my first heart break in which I wanted to depict a woman squeezing the blood out of her own heart. La Malinche (the third piece) was the indigenous woman who gave birth to the first mestizo child of Mexico. She was viewed as a traitor to her people, but feminist inquiry tells us that she did not have the choice to dictate where she would go as a woman during colonial times and likely took the steps that she had to in order to survive. I learned this story in my Latin American History class and found the story so compelling that I decided to make it into a painting.
